Overseas

Should you require medical care outside the U.S., rest assured that Standard Option has you covered. Be sure to carry your identification card when you travel to receive quality care and assistance — wherever you are in the world.

Overseas assistance

Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, our Overseas Assistance Center provides assistance to Members traveling outside of the United States and Puerto Rico. Bilingual operators are also available.

The Overseas Assistance Center can:

  • Verify your enrollment
  • Locate a physician
  • Refer you to the nearest participating hospital or facility
  • Make transportation arrangements to another health care setting

To reach the Overseas Assistance Center, call +1 (804) 673-1678 collect or email FEPOverseas@worldaccess.com.

Blue Cross Blue Shield does have a network of Participating hospitals overseas. Although we do not have a network of Participating physicians and healthcare professionals, the Overseas Assistance Center can help you locate both a hospital in our network and a physician near where you are staying. You may have to pay for the services and then submit a claim for reimbursement.

How your benefits work overseas

For information about overseas benefits and your claims, call us toll-free at +1 888.999.9862 using the appropriate country code.

Inpatient hospital care

Standard Option benefits are paid at the Preferred level. You are responsible for a $200 admission copayment. Precertification is not required for hospital admission outside the U.S.

Outpatient hospital care

Standard Option benefits are paid at the Preferred level, based on the Overseas Fee Schedule. After your calendar year deductible is met, you pay only the 15% coinsurance amount for outpatient hospital or facility care.

Physician care

Standard Option benefits for care provided by a physician or other covered professional provider outside the U.S. are paid at the Preferred level based on the Overseas Fee Schedule.

Prescription drugs

Drugs and medications that require prescriptions overseas may differ from those that require a prescription in the U.S. Drugs purchased outside the U.S. must be an equivalent product to drugs that by Federal law of the U.S. require a prescription to purchase.

Pharmacy
If you purchase a prescription drug at a local pharmacy outside the U.S., you will have to pay for the medication and then file a claim to us for reimbursement. Payment will be based on the Preferred level benefit.

Mail Service
Under Standard Option, you can also order prescription drugs through the Mail Service Prescription Drug Program. Your address must have a U.S. ZIP code and the prescribing physician must be licensed in the U.S.
