We know that the new year has been filled with many challenges and much uncertainty. But you can rest assured that the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Federal Employee Program (FEP) is here for you with the coverage and benefits you and your family need.

For 65 years, the health of the federal workforce has been our number one priority. We stand by that promise today. No matter where you are in your career, you can count on FEP to provide the right coverage, answers and support you and your family need.

If you’re thinking about retiring, here's what you need to know:

Your benefits don’t change

When you retire, you get the same benefits you have now as an actively working employee. Your premiums also don’t go up because you’re retired.

Remember the five-year rule

To keep your medical coverage, you must have five (5) years of continuous enrollment in the FEHB or PSHB before you retire.

This rule only applies to FEHB and PSHB coverage—not FEDVIP.

Don’t cancel your coverage

As long as you don't cancel your insurance, it will never go away for as long as you're retired.

If you do choose to cancel, you will never be able to reenroll in FEHB or PSHB. If you want to try a non-FEHB or non-PSHB Medicare Advantage plan or TRICARE, suspend your coverage, don't cancel it.

For more guidance on planning for your retirement, visit Preparing for Medicare.

If you’re already retired, your FEP health benefits will remain the same.

There are no benefit changes expected in 2025. Combining your FEP coverage with Medicare Part A and Part B gives you additional benefits that Medicare alone doesn’t cover.

Lost coverage? Continue your FEP health benefits with Temporary Continuation of Coverage (TCC)

You will receive an additional 31 days of medical coverage for no additional premium when:

  • You are a family member no longer eligible for coverage

Temporary Continuation of Coverage (TCC)

Temporary Continuation of Coverage (TCC) allows former employees to continue their health care coverage for up to 18 months and eligible family members to continue their health care coverage for up to 36 months. Members enrolling in TCC are responsible for both the employee and employer share of the premium, plus an additional 2% administrative fee.

Other BCBS Coverage Options

After you leave the federal government, you may be eligible for a local Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance plan through a different employer or through the Affordable Care Act’s Health Insurance Marketplace. For assistance, you can contact your local BCBS company at the number on the back of your member ID card or found here

You can also learn more about the Health Insurance Marketplace at healthcare.gov.

No Extension for FEDVIP Coverage

Be aware that you cannot continue your Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP) coverage if you leave Federal service. Under FEDVIP, there is no extension of coverage, temporary continuation of coverage (TCC), spouse equity coverage or right to convert to an individual policy (conversion policy).
