Diabetes Care: What You Need to Know
Diabetes is more common than you think. Over 30 million Americans have it. Luckily, there are ways to manage diabetes so you can live a comfortable, healthy life.
Regular testing helps you monitor how your body is responding to treatment. Routine diabetes care tests include four different areas: HbA1c control, retinal eye exams, kidney function and blood pressure control. Diabetes affects your whole body and these tests can help you stay in control and prevent serious health complications in the future. What are the three primary tests you should receive regularly?
- HbA1c test: HbA1c is also referred to as hemoglobin A1c or simply A1c. This blood test is the primary method for managing your diabetes. It provides information about your average levels of blood sugar over the past three months. Get this test 2-4 times per year.
- Retinal eye exam: This dilated eye exam checks for damage to the blood vessels in your retina (a layer of tissue within the eye). It can catch early abnormalities and help prevent diabetic retinopathy. Get this test at least once a year.
- Kidney function: Diabetic nephropathy or kidney disease can be detected by a urinary albumin test, which measures the amount of protein in your kidneys. Get this test at least once per year.
Talk to your doctor about how often you should receive these tests—they will personalize a care plan according to your specific needs.
It’s also important for those with diabetes to keep their blood pressure under control. Stroke, heart disease and other complications are more likely if your blood pressure is high.
Lifestyle changes, like diet and exercise, also play a huge role in diabetes management. Eating balanced meals can help keep your blood sugar levels stable. Try incorporating fresh fruits or vegetables into every meal.
Being physically active can help reduce blood sugar levels and help your body to be more responsive to insulin. Most doctors recommend 30 minutes of exercise per day, five days a week. It’s easy to start—just try walking. Remember, exercise is not one-size-fits-all. Find something you enjoy that suits your needs. Starting a routine with a friend or family member can help.
Diet and physical fitness can significantly improve your success in managing your condition. Always remember to check with your doctor about your diet and exercise regimen to decide what is right for you.
