Mental Health Matters
Mental health refers to behavioral and emotional well-being. It’s a crucial part of our overall health. But, unlike a physical condition like a broken bone, mental health conditions might not be visible to the human eye. That’s why it’s important to monitor your mental health and take action when necessary.
You’re not alone! The National Association for Mental Illness (NAMI) estimates that nearly one in five Americans experience mental health problems each year. This affects people of all genders, income and ethnicities.
It also affects people of all ages. Children can struggle with mental health too—having a good headspace is especially important for them as they develop physically and mentally.
Many people with mental health disorders struggle with more than one condition at a time. Mental health care specialists can perform a psychological evaluation where they ask questions about symptoms, feelings and behavioral patterns.
Your mental health and physical health are connected, too. Sometimes the latter can affect how you think and feel. Doctors can also run laboratory tests to see if there are any underlying conditions.
You should keep an eye out for symptoms on your own to monitor your mental health. Common symptoms of mental health conditions include:
- Withdrawing from friends, family and colleagues
- Avoiding activities you would normally enjoy
- Sleeping too much or too little
- Eating too much or too little
- Feeling hopeless
- Having consistently low energy
So, what can you do to keep up with your mental health?
First, make sure you reach out to someone within your support system. This could mean a friend or family member, even a registered therapist. Therapy provides patients a safe space to discuss thoughts, feelings, and concerns if they are unable to express those things to someone in their regular life.
Another way to help your mental health is through exercise. Studies show that regular exercise can increase mood and regulate sleep, both of which are imperative for mental health. You don’t have to do a vigorous workout to support your mental wellness though, you can try a restorative yoga class or just take a long walk outdoors. What matters most is that you move your body a bit every day.
