Understanding FEP and Medicare

Navigating Medicare can be confusing, but we're here to help make it easier. If you are a member of FEP, you have options when it comes to combining it with Medicare. Here’s a quick guide to help you understand the basics, prepare for Medicare and find resources for more information.

Combining FEP and Medicare
When you’re enrolled in both FEP and Medicare, you get a comprehensive coverage package. Here’s how it works:

  • Primary and secondary coverage: Medicare typically becomes your primary insurance, and FEP acts as secondary coverage. This means Medicare pays first, and then FEP helps cover the remaining costs.
  • Reduced out-of-pocket costs: Pay no out-of-pocket costs for certain covered services, such as primary care visits, urgent care centers, surgery, lab work and more.
  • FEP Blue Basic™ members with Medicare Part A and Part B and/or Part C can get reimbursed up to $800 a year through a Medicare Reimbursement Account.
  • Prescription drug coverage: You’re eligible for the FEP Medicare Prescription Drug Program, which offers lower out-of-pocket costs for higher-cost drugs and additional approved prescription drugs in some tiers than the traditional pharmacy benefit, all as part of the FEP premium.

Quick tips to prepare for Medicare

  • Know your eligibility: Most people are eligible for Medicare when they turn 65. If you’re still working or have other insurance, you may have options for when to start Medicare.
  • Understand enrollment periods: The initial enrollment period for Medicare lasts three months before and after your 65th birthday. Make sure to enroll during this period to avoid late penalties.
  • Review your current coverage: Compare your current FEP coverage with Medicare to see how they work together. This will help you understand what’s covered and what isn’t.
  • Consider your healthcare needs: Think about your health needs and whether your current BCBS FEP plan meets them. Combining it with Medicare can provide additional benefits and coverage.
  • Plan for costs: While Medicare covers many expenses, there are still out-of-pocket costs. Make sure to budget for premiums, deductibles and copayments.
