How to Properly Disinfect Your Home

Keeping your home clean and germ-free doesn’t have to be complicated. With so many cleaning tips out there, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, but sticking to the basics can help you stay on track. Here’s a simple guide to properly disinfect your home and keep your space healthy and safe.

Cleaning vs. disinfecting: What’s the difference?

  • Cleaning means removing dirt and dust, but it doesn’t kill germs.
  • Disinfecting uses chemicals to kill germs and bacteria on surfaces.

For the best results, clean surfaces with soap and water first, then use a disinfectant with at least 70% alcohol or an EPA-approved product to get rid of germs.

Hit the high-touch spots first
Some areas in your home are touched all the time, making them hot spots for germs. These include:

  • Door handles
  • Light switches
  • Remote controls
  • Countertops
  • Faucets and sink handles
  • Stair railings

Disinfect these spots regularly using a cleaning wipe or spray.

Steam clean fabric surfaces
For couches, curtains and carpets, steam cleaning is a great option. The heat kills germs without using harsh chemicals and keeps your fabrics fresh and clean.

Try non-toxic cleaning products
If you’re looking for a healthier option, non-toxic cleaners can be just as effective. Here are a few ideas:

  • A mix of vinegar and water works great for windows and mirrors.
  • Baking soda can scrub away dirt and smells from sinks and tubs.

Just be sure to read the instructions on any cleaner to make sure it’s used properly for disinfecting.

Stick to a cleaning routine
Having a schedule makes cleaning easier to manage. Here’s a simple plan:

Daily tasks:

  • Wipe down high-touch surfaces.
  • Clean kitchen counters and dining tables.
  • Disinfect bathroom sinks and handles.

Weekly tasks:

  • Mop the floors with a disinfectant.
  • Wash bedding, towels and cleaning cloths in hot water.
  • Sanitize or replace sponges.

Monthly tasks:

  • Deep clean and disinfect appliances like your fridge and microwave.

Make cleaning part of your day
Cleaning can be a great way to sneak in some extra movement. Wiping, scrubbing and mopping all count as light exercise, so put on some music and get moving while making your home spotless.
